Some Stories of Dattatreya and His Devotees

Dattatreya is known for his miraculous deeds and his compassion towards his devotees. There are many stories of how he helped, guided and protected those who sought his grace. Here are some of them:

  • Once, a king named Kartavirya Arjuna visited the ashram of sage Jamadagni, who was the father of Parashurama. The sage offered him a feast with the help of a divine cow named Kamadhenu. The king was amazed by the cow's abilities and wanted to take it with him. When Jamadagni refused, the king forcefully took the cow and killed the sage. Parashurama avenged his father's death by killing the king and his army. He then went on a rampage, killing all the kshatriyas (warriors) in the world 21 times. He was filled with anger and remorse. He then met Dattatreya, who advised him to perform penance at Mahendra mountain and gave him the Tripura Rahasya, a text on Advaita Vedanta. Parashurama followed his advice and attained peace and enlightenment.

  • Another time, a devotee named Nanda was suffering from leprosy. He was shunned by everyone and had no one to help him. He prayed to Dattatreya with great faith and devotion. Dattatreya appeared before him and asked him what he wanted. Nanda said that he wanted to be cured of his disease and to serve the lord. Dattatreya touched him with his hand and cured him of his leprosy. He then told him to go to a nearby river and take a bath. When Nanda did so, he found a Shivalinga (a symbol of Lord Shiva) in the river. He worshiped it with flowers and water. Dattatreya then appeared again and told him that he was pleased with his service and granted him liberation.

  • A third story is about a woman named Anubhuti, who was a widow with a young son. She was devoted to Dattatreya and always chanted his name. One day, a fierce demon named Mada came to her village and started killing people. He saw Anubhuti and wanted to devour her and her son. Anubhuti ran to the nearby forest and prayed to Dattatreya for protection. Dattatreya heard her prayer and came to her rescue. He fought with the demon and killed him with his trident. He then blessed Anubhuti and her son and gave them a boon that they would always be happy and prosperous.

The Symbolism of Dattatreya's Iconography

Dattatreya is usually depicted as a young man with three heads, representing Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva; six hands, holding a conch shell (shankha), a discus (chakra), a lotus (padma), a trident (trishula), a water pot (kamandalu) and a drum (damaru); and dressed as an ascetic. He is surrounded by four dogs, symbolizing the four Vedas; and a cow, symbolizing the earth and abundance. He may also be accompanied by his consort Anagha or Shakti.
